As of 1931, in the United States all jewelry pieces that are stamped with a karat marking must also be stamped with the manufacturer's trademark. If a ring has only a karat stamping, or none at all, it may be that it was made before 1931, be a foreign-made piece, or it was sized and all or part of the markings are gone.
